Language Learning: Choosing “The One”

While fun, educational, and exciting, learning a language is no easy feat. It takes time and commitment to really master a new language – and even then, there’s always something new to discover! Choosing a new language to study can sometimes feel like going on a million dates in search of “The One.” Which language will you actually want to commit to? How will you know when you’re ready to set off on a lifelong journey?

With that in mind, we’ve put together some tips for choosing a new language to study:

-Obviously, you should like your new language! Does it feel especially musical to you? Does this language carry emotional resonance?

-Purpose is key! What do you hope to gain from learning this language? What’s going to keep you going when you hit your first stumbling block?

-Check costs! Languages that come with a high degree of difficulty (e.g., learning an alphabet other than your native alphabet, significant grammatical differences) might cost more to learn. This is usually a reflection of the fact that they’re a real commitment!

-Learn about the culture surrounding the language – food, music, traditions – and see how that culture resonates with you!

-Consider the practical uses – when will you use this language? Why is it important for you to learn it now?

With all the above in mind, you’re ready to choose “The One” (or maybe several Ones!). We can’t wait to be your matchmakers here at ABC Languages, and set you off on a course of lifelong discovery.

Happy Learning!
